Seeking Facilitators: Fall 2017

Position type: Volunteer, 4 hours/week

Language Partners BC is a volunteer-run organization supporting one-to-one face-to-face language exchange programs in Vancouver and training community members to be facilitators. We bring together adults from different language backgrounds and provide infrastructure for them to learn languages together and build relationships. Many of the participants are new immigrants or refugees, and our programs are focused on supporting these newcomers in conversation and settlement.

We value diversity, equality, peace, camaraderie, fun, and open-mindedness. We are also serious about assessing our work, refining our programs, and growing to support more people. The long-term goal is to support dozens of diverse language exchange programs across the province.

We are currently looking for facilitators for the following programs:

Mixed Language Exchange at Oakridge VPL: Mondays

For men and women who want to exchange a language – any language!
Mondays 6:30-8:30 PM, October 16 - December 4, 2017 (8 weeks)
Location: Oakridge branch of Vancouver Public Library, South Vancouver
Maximum 10 participants

Mixed Language Exchange at Strathcona VPL: Wednesdays

For men and women who want to exchange a language – any language!
Wednesday 6:30-8:30 PM, October 11 - November 29, 2017 (8 weeks)
Location: nə́c̓aʔmat ct Strathcona branch of Vancouver Public Library, East Vancouver
Maximum 10 participants

You will have a co-facilitator with you for every session.
A requirement is attending facilitator training on Sunday, October 1st.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Facilitating the Open House and the weekly sessions: introducing topics, leading conversations, getting feedback, explaining activities, responding to group interests.
  • Administrative tasks: collecting registration forms, inputting registration information, matching participants, and contacting participants by email or phone, tracking attendance, collecting feedback forms, submitting a weekly report of how the session went.
  • Coordinating with your Co-Facilitator to make sure you are ready for each session, and debriefing after.
  • Gathering and sharing stories from your program sessions for our social media channels.
  • Attending a program debrief after the program ends.
  • Optional: Participating as a language exchange partner yourself during the program.

Desired Qualifications (But apply no matter what!):

  • Experience facilitating language exchange and/or participating in language exchange
  • Experience working with groups
  • Passion for community building
  • Technical proficiency with Google Docs
  • Accountability: Will you show up on time? Will you respond to communication in reasonable time?
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Genuine curiosity and enjoyment of people

Seeking Social Media Coordinator: Fall 2017

Language Partners BC is a volunteer-run organization supporting one-to-one face-to-face language exchange programs in Vancouver, and training community members to be facilitators. We value diversity, equality, peace, camaraderie, fun, and open-mindedness. We are also serious about assessing our work, refining our programs, and growing to support more people. The long-term goal is to support dozens of diverse language exchange programs across the province. 

We are looking for a Social Media Coordinator to lead in promoting the organization and managing the communities of followers and supporters on social media (at this point, only Facebook).

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate regular posts on our Facebook page (minimum 4 posts/week), including original program-related content, graphics, and reposted content related to language learning, community building, and key events, organizations, and people in Vancouver and British Columbia.
  • Respond consistently to comments, questions, and messages from followers and community members.
  • Optional, based on your interest: Develop, propose, and execute your own creative ideas for social media campaigns.
  • Work with the Database and Website Coordinator as needed to ensure our website and Facebook page make sense together and interact effectively.
  • Report on progress and troubleshoot challenges in meetings every two weeks with the Director. 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in managing social media accounts for a similar group, organization, or issue
  • Passion for community building
  • Technical proficiency in administering Facebook accounts
  • Accountability
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Genuine curiosity and enjoyment of people
  • Multilingualism would be a bonus
  • Photography skills would be a bonus 

Support:

  • Introduction meeting with the Director to develop expectations and a plan
  • Access to our full Google Drive of documentation, and administrator access to our Facebook account
  • Email introductions to the Database and Website Coordinator, the past Social Media Coordinators, the Assistant Coordinator, and any current Facilitators
  • Meetings every two weeks with the Director, and email support as needed

Seeking Childminders: Fall 2017

We are currently looking for 2 childminders for the following program:

Women’s Language Exchange at Masjid Omar Al-Farooq: Sundays

For women who want to exchange a language – any language! Arabic-English will probably be popular exchange, but all languages are welcome.
Sundays 10 AM - 12 PM, October 15 - December 3, 2017 (8 weeks)
Location: Masjid Omar Al-Farooq on 10th Avenue @ Commercial Drive

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Providing on site child minding for the children of mothers who will be participating in the language exchange.
  • Preparing materials and activities for the children.
  • Arriving 10 minutes early to prepare.

Desired Qualifications (But apply no matter what!):

  • Experience child minding.
  • Experience in multicultural/multilingual environments.
