About Us

What is Language Partners BC?

We are a volunteer-run co-operative organization that creates and supports free language exchange programs in British Columbia. Our programs usually bring neighbours together face-to-face to improve language fluency and build community – due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have moved to Zoom for online programs. We partner with organizations and institutions to spread the word and share space, and we train our facilitators ourselves.

As a co-op, our members take an active role in guiding the direction and operation of Language Partners BC. However, you do not need to be a member of Language Partners BC Co-op to participate in our programs. You can find out more about what it means to be a co-op member on our Co-op page.

How do language exchange programs work?

Our language exchange programs are 8-12 weeks long, depending on the season. Partners usually meet at a physical location once per week, for two hours, and spend half the time in one language and half the time in the other language. With Zoom programs, partners meet for 90 minutes online. All partners receive materials and facilitation from trained facilitators. Partners also have the opportunity to meet and have conversations with other people in the program. We keep the group size to a maximum of 12 people to encourage networking.

Principles of language exchange:

  • All languages are equally valuable

  • Autonomy – you choose what and how you learn

  • Reciprocity – we help each other

  • Fun

What languages can I learn?

Any language that another person offers. You will sign up to learn any languages that you are interested in, and if we can find a partner for you, you will be matched.
